朝青龍「すべて真剣勝負」と否定

大相撲の八百長疑惑を報じた「週刊現代」の記事で名誉を傷付けられたとして、日本相撲協会と横綱朝青龍関ら力士が発行元の講談社などに損害賠償を求めた訴訟の口頭弁論が３日、東京地裁（中村也寸志裁判長）で開かれ、八百長の中心人物として名指しされた朝青龍関本人が出廷し、八百長への関与を「ありません。すべて真剣勝負」と全面否定した。現役横綱が法廷で証言するのは「記憶にない」（相撲協会）といい、極めて異例だ。

口頭弁論では、講談社側が「記事が出て八百長がしにくくなったから、成績が振るわないのでは」と追及。朝青龍関は「（原因は）けがです」と反論した。一方、被告側からは記事を執筆したフリーライターの武田頼政氏と、八百長を告白した元小結の板井圭介氏が出廷。武田氏は、「八百長は相撲界の因習で、根深く始末に負えない」と批判した。

講談社側は、大麻取締法違反容疑で逮捕されて協会を解雇された後、「八百長にかかわった」と記者会見で述べた元幕内若ノ鵬（２０）＝本名・ガグロエフ・ソスラン、起訴猶予＝を証人申請したが、中村裁判長は採否を留保した。

Asashōryū denies allegations of match-fixing

Claiming that the magazine “Shūkan Gendai” has damaged his honor by publishing an article giving rise to suspicions that he has been involved in Sumo match-fixing, The Japan Sumō Federation and Yokozuna Asashōryū have filed suit against publisher Kōdansha, seeking compensation for damages.  Oral proceedings began on the 3rd in Tōkyō District Court (Judge Nakamura Yasushi presiding). The central individual accused of match-fixing, Asashōryū appeared in court and flatly denied the charges, saying, “There was none.  Ever match was hard-fought.”

The Sumō Association said that this is unprecedented; there is no record of an active Yokozuna ever having testified in court.

In oral arguments, attorneys for Kōdansha asserted that “since the article has come out, it has become harder to fix matches.  One cannot deny the results.”  Asashoryu objected, stating that this is “injurious.”  Meanwhile, Takeda Yorimasa, the freelance writer who penned the article for the defendant, and the former Komusubi Sakai Keisuke appeared in court, commenting that “match fixing in Sumō is a long-established, deep-rooted tradition; cleaning it up will be impossible.”

Kōdansha’s defense team testified that former Makunouchi-ranked Waka no Hō said at a press conference that, after his arrest and indictment on charges of violation of the Cannibus Control Law were dismissed, he “became involved in fixing matches.”   Judge Nakamura is currently withholding judgment on this information.

通り魔 ほかにも３本のナイフ

東京・秋葉原で、男女７人が死亡、１０人が重軽傷を負った通り魔事件で、逮捕された男が乗っていたトラックの中などから、ほかにも３本のナイフが押収されたことがわかりました。

この事件では、殺人未遂の疑いで逮捕された加藤智大容疑者（２５）が犯行に使ったナイフと上着の内ポケットに持っていた折りたたみ式のナイフの２本が押収されたことがわかっています。その後の警視庁の調べで、加藤容疑者が乗っていたレンタカーの２トントラックの助手席にあったリュックサックの中から、新たに２本のナイフと特殊警棒が押収されたほか、現場の交差点でもナイフ１本が見つかったということです。これで加藤容疑者が持っていたナイフは、あわせて５本になりました。調べに対して加藤容疑者は「ナイフは、犯行の数日前に福井で買った」と供述しているということです。警視庁は、なぜこれだけ多くの刃物を準備して犯行に及んだのか調べることにしています。

Phantom Slasher - Three More Knives Found

Akihabara, Tokyo. Seven men and women have died and 10 have received serious and minor injuries in a series of random street slasher assaults. It has been reported that three more knives were found in the truck of a man arrested for the crime.

Kato Tomohiro (25), arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, was found to be carrying the knife used in the crimes as well as 2 folding knives in his shirt pocket. Police also found 2 more knives and a police baton in a backpack on the passenger seat of his rented two-ton truck. Another knife was found at the crosswalk near the scene of the crime, bringing the total to 5 knives. According to the investigation, Kato testified that he “bought the knife that was used in the criminal act several days ago at Fukui.” Police are trying to figure out why he had prepared so many knives for the commission of these crimes.

先月、神奈川県横須賀市でタクシーの運転手が殺害された事件で、３日逮捕されたアメリカ兵の男は警察の調べに対し容疑を認めましたが、３日夜接見した弁護士には「殺すつもりはなかった」などと話したということです。警察は、４日からアメリカ兵の取り調べを本格化し、詳しい動機などを追及することにしています。

In the case of a Kanagawa prefecture, Yokosuka city taxi driver who was murdered last month, an American male serviceman who was arrested on the 3rd admitted to the charges. However, in an interview on the evening of the 3rd, his attorney stated that it was “not his (client’s) intent to kill.” As of the 4th, the police investigation is proceeding, in an attempt to determine a concrete motive.

A high-level NATO (The North Atlantic Treaty Organization) conference has started in Bulgaria’s capital city of Bucharest. In dispute is whether to admit former Soviet states Ukraine and Georgia. Because each country differs in opinion, the negotiations have run into rough waters.

American serviceman’s credit card… unusable

Last month, in the case where a Kanagawa prefecture, Yokosuka city cab driver was murdered, it has been reported that an American serviceman’s unusable credit card was found inside the vehicle.

According to police, the American serviceman is suspected of having murdered the driver, then fleeing the scene without paying the fare. An arrest warrant was requested on the 3rd of the month on the grounds of suspicion of robbery and murder. The plan is to request extradition of the suspect.

My plan isn’t to teach you beginning Japanese. But if you’re at the intermediate level, some of this may be of use to you. As time goes on, I’ll add more contemporary news articles and give you just enough to figure out how to translate them for yourself.
